I received your latest disc, North Land I don’t know if anything I can say can do justice to the wonderful songs you have written and collected on this album!
When I listen to many of the songs I am reminded again of why I like folk music so much. There is so much value to music that enriches our identity, and that
gives us back our history by the means of skillfully written songs, so we
can remember our roots, re-evaluate our roots, see ourselves by a new light.
Your songs do this.
I especially appreciate the well-rounded and broad range of themes in your
songs--including chapters in our history that are forgotten, or denied--The
Flooding of Lac Seul, Pierre Bonga. I listen with delight to the songs
about Simon Fraser and David Thompson.
I feel these characters need to be rescued from the history books
that put my children to sleep in school and drive them to distraction, to
bring their essence back into our consciousness and to keep them there, in
an accessible way. This act of reminding us, of keeping our history in our
consciousness, of keeping it vital and present to instruct us, is a very
important aspect of the folk musician’s role in our culture...
Thanks for the gift of this disc, North Land, which does this...gives us our
history in some palpable, real form...reminds us in some sense of the wonder
and mystery that we all are.
